Cushion spurge (Euphorbia epithymoides, often referenced as Euphorbia polychroma) is a herbaceous perennial plant within the Euphorbiaceae family. Renowned for its mound-forming habit and vivid yellow bracts in spring, this species is a staple in ornamental horticulture, providing structural interest in landscapes.
Originating from Central and Southeastern Europe, the plant is naturally adapted to rocky and dry slopes. This background ensures that the crop is relatively drought-tolerant once established and thrives in conditions that might be challenging for more moisture-dependent perennial species.
Botanically, the plant grows in a neat, hemispherical mound, typically reaching heights of 30 to 50 cm. Agronomically, cushion spurge requires full sun to partial shade for optimal blooming. The most critical factor in its successful cultivation is soil drainage; it will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. It prefers lean, slightly alkaline soils and thrives in rock gardens or well-drained borders where root rot can be avoided.
