Description
Sea spurge (Euphorbia paralias) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. As a specialized psammophyte, it is biologically adapted to thrive in harsh coastal environments, specifically sand dunes, where its deep and spreading root system provides essential structural support for loose sandy substrates.
The native range of this species extends across the Mediterranean, Black, and Caspian Sea basins, as well as the Atlantic coast of Europe. It is a quintessential coastal plant, highly tolerant of salt spray and the high temperatures associated with open, sandy environments, making it a key species in maritime habitat biodiversity.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its glaucous, leathery, and densely arranged leaves, which effectively reduce transpiration. The stems grow in clumps, reaching heights of 50–70 cm. The reproductive structures, known as cyathia, appear as clusters of yellowish-green bracts, typically blooming throughout the summer months to ensure seed production.
Regarding agrotechnical requirements, sea spurge demands exceptionally well-drained soil and full sun exposure. It does not tolerate waterlogging or high-nutrient soils, which can lead to rapid fungal decay. Propagation is usually achieved through direct seeding, and once established, the plant requires almost no additional maintenance, making it highly self-sufficient in its natural habitat.
Its primary economic and ecological use is in coastal engineering and environmental restoration. By stabilizing loose dunes, it prevents sand displacement during high winds and storms. While it is not an agricultural food crop due to its toxic latex sap, it serves as an excellent candidate for sustainable landscaping in saline or sandy zones where conventional planting would fail.
Pest and disease management is generally minimal for this hardy species. However, growers should remain vigilant for symptoms of root rot in poorly drained zones. While it has few insect enemies, specific aphids may colonize the stems; however, due to the toxic nature of the plant, major pest outbreaks are rare, allowing it to maintain its protective cover over long periods.
