Originating from Europe and parts of Western Asia, this species has successfully naturalized in many regions with temperate climates worldwide. Botanically, the plant is characterized by its milky latex present in all stems and leaves. It typically grows to a height of 20-50 cm with a branched stem and sessile, oblong-shaped leaves. The reproductive structures consist of small, greenish-yellow flowers arranged in complex cymes, which are typical of the Euphorbia genus.
From an agrotechnical perspective, the broad-leaved spurge thrives in well-lit areas and is particularly prolific in moisture-retentive soils. It spreads exclusively through seed dispersal. A single plant can produce a vast number of seeds, which remain viable in the soil seed bank for years, making eradication a long-term process rather than a one-season task.
The plant has no positive agricultural use and is considered toxic to livestock due to its caustic latex. Controlling this weed requires an integrated approach, combining crop rotation, regular mechanical tillage, and the strategic application of herbicides. Failure to manage this weed results in significant yield losses and potential contamination of harvested crop seeds.
