Euphorbia susannae is a miniature, clumping succulent species belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. Known for its distinct morphological appearance, the plant forms tight, dense clusters of short, cylindrical stems that resemble coral-like formations, making it a highly prized specimen among succulent enthusiasts and botanical collectors.
Originating from the Cape Province of South Africa, this species is native to arid, rocky landscapes. In its natural environment, the plant has evolved to survive extreme heat and prolonged droughts by storing moisture within its succulent stems. Due to its limited natural range and specialized growth requirements, it is primarily cultivated in greenhouses, rock gardens, or as a specialty indoor plant.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by numerous tubercular stems that grow from a central root system. Unlike larger Euphorbia species, this plant maintains a very low profile, rarely exceeding a few centimeters in height. It produces small cyathia (inflorescences) during the growth season, which are typical for the genus but primarily decorative in function.
Cultivation requires strict attention to soil drainage and light exposure. The plant thrives in an inorganic, gritty substrate that allows for rapid water drainage. During the active growing season, it requires bright light and infrequent, deep watering. During the winter dormancy phase, water must be withheld almost entirely, and temperatures should be kept cool to prevent etiolation and fungal rot.
