It is distinct for its large, circular, floating leaves that can reach a diameter of up to two meters, with the entire lower surface covered in sharp spines, which serve as a natural defense mechanism against herbivores.

The plant is native to tropical and temperate regions of Asia, specifically distributed across India, China, Japan, and Korea. Traditionally cultivated in shallow, stagnant water bodies, the plant thrives in rich, alluvial, and organic-heavy silt. It has been a significant part of Asian agricultural history, valued for its nutritional profile and therapeutic properties.

Botanically, Euryale ferox is characterized by its rhizomatous root system and a unique reproductive cycle where flowers bloom partially above the water surface. The seeds, enclosed within a large, spiny berry-like fruit, are the primary harvestable product. These seeds are rich in starch, proteins, and essential minerals, making them a staple in certain regional diets.

Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions, including a water depth between 0.5 and 1.5 meters and a temperature range of 20°C to 30°C.
