Fagraea berteroana, commonly known as pua keni keni, is a robust evergreen tree or shrub belonging to the Gentianaceae family. Renowned for its intensely fragrant, tubular flowers that change color from cream to deep orange, it is a hallmark species of Pacific island horticulture and serves as a significant ornamental plant in tropical landscapes.
The species is native to the tropical islands of the South Pacific, spanning from Polynesia to Australia. It thrives in humid environments, typically found in lowland and montane rainforests. Its natural habitat is characterized by high annual rainfall and consistent, warm temperatures, which are essential for its year-round growth and abundant flowering cycles.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its thick, leathery leaves and fleshy fruit, which house numerous small seeds. The flowers are notable for their sensory impact, emitting a sweet, gardenia-like scent that intensifies in the evening. Structurally, the tree is long-lived and can grow quite tall if not pruned, exhibiting a dense, symmetrical canopy that provides excellent shade.
Agricultural and gardening requirements focus on well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH. While the tree is relatively hardy, it necessitates protection from waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. Supplemental feeding with high-potassium fertilizers during the flowering season is recommended to support continuous blooming and overall plant vigor.
Economic and cultural utility is diverse. In Hawaii and other Pacific islands, the flowers are highly valued for making lei (garlands) and for their essential oils used in traditional perfumes.
