Alpine fescue (Latin: Festuca alpina) is a perennial grass species belonging to the family Poaceae. It is highly regarded in agricultural and ecological contexts for its remarkable resilience and ability to thrive in harsh, high-altitude environmental conditions where most common forage grasses fail.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, specifically the alpine and subalpine belts. Its natural habitat includes rocky slopes, crevices, and open grasslands. Evolutionarily, it has developed specific physiological mechanisms to survive freezing temperatures, short growing seasons, and the intense UV radiation found at high elevations.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its tufted growth habit, creating dense mats of narrow, rigid leaves. This dense architecture is a defense mechanism against wind and grazing. The root system is fibrous and deep-reaching, which helps in nutrient absorption from poor, stony soils and provides excellent soil stabilization.

Regarding cultivation requirements, alpine fescue demands well-drained soil and cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions. It thrives in lean, neutral to slightly acidic soils. Agronomic management involves maintaining soil porosity, as compaction can lead to rapid decline of the stand. It is generally resistant to most common agricultural pests, although it can be susceptible to fungal pathogens in excessively humid climates.

In agricultural practice, alpine fescue is primarily used for pasture improvement in mountainous regions and for erosion control on steep hillsides. Because of its dense root structure and aesthetic appeal, it is also utilized in landscape architecture for creating stable, low-maintenance alpine-style lawns and for the revegetation of areas affected by soil erosion.
