Sand fescue (Latin: Festuca arenaria) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This resilient plant is well-known for its unique ability to survive in harsh, nutrient-poor environments, particularly in sandy coastal habitats across Europe.

The origin of the species is linked to the littoral zones of the continent, where it has evolved to thrive in shifting dunes. This geographical adaptation allows the plant to withstand intense winds, salt spray, and highly unstable substrates where competition from other plant species is extremely low.

Botanically, sand fescue is characterized by a deep and intricate root system that provides structural stability to the soil.
