Porcupine fescue

Porcupine fescue (Festuca hystrix) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its distinctively rigid, needle-like foliage, this plant is a staple in xeriscaping and sustainable landscaping, offering high durability and minimal maintenance requirements.

Originating from the dry, rocky, and limestone-rich regions of Europe, the species is naturally adapted to challenging environments. It thrives in open, sunny habitats where other species might struggle due to moisture stress or poor soil fertility, making it an excellent candidate for stabilizing difficult terrains.

Botanically, this grass forms dense, rounded tussocks. The leaves are characteristically stiff and blue-green or glaucous in color, growing to a height of about 20 to 30 centimeters. The plant produces delicate inflorescences during the summer, which add to its aesthetic value while maintaining a compact, orderly growth habit that rarely requires trimming.

In terms of cultivation, Festuca hystrix prefers well-drained, gritty, or sandy soils. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and does not require frequent irrigation. It performs best in full sun and is notably cold-hardy, surviving in regions with significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year.
