Coastal fescue (Festuca littoralis) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This plant is well-known for its ability to thrive in harsh coastal environments, where it plays a critical role in stabilizing sandy soils and maintaining the integrity of littoral ecosystems.

The origin of this species is linked to temperate coastal regions, including dunes, sandy bars, and saline grasslands. Its native range is characterized by exposure to oceanic winds and high salt spray, factors that have shaped the plant's unique physiological adaptations for survival in nutrient-poor environments.

Botanically, it forms dense, tough tufts with an extensive, deep-reaching root architecture designed to anchor the plant in unstable substrates. The leaves are typically narrow and stiff, possessing a waxy cuticle to prevent water loss. Its inflorescence is a panicle, which produces viable seeds adapted for dispersal by wind or water along the coast.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, it is a low-maintenance crop. It prefers sandy or well-drained loamy soils with low salinity tolerance. Irrigation is generally only required during the establishment phase, after which the plant becomes highly drought-tolerant. It performs best in full sunlight and does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

The primary agricultural and landscape use for coastal fescue is in soil conservation. Key applications include:

  • Stabilization of dunes and coastal erosion control.
  • Reclamation of degraded or sandy industrial lands.
  • Integration into restoration seed mixes to restore biodiversity.

Like many wild-growing grasses, it is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, in unfavorable conditions with high humidity, it can be susceptible to rust fungi or leaf blight. Management practices focus on minimizing mechanical damage to the root system and preventing the encroachment of invasive species that might compete for nutrients.
