Matthews fescue (Festuca matthewsii) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This plant is recognized as a dense-tufted bunchgrass, evolutionarily designed to survive in the rugged environmental conditions of alpine and subalpine zones.
The species is endemic to the high-altitude regions of New Zealand’s South Island. Its natural habitat consists of rocky soils and exposed slopes, where the plant has adapted to strong winds, high UV exposure, and frequent temperature fluctuations that inhibit the growth of many other plant species.
Morphologically, Matthews fescue is characterized by narrow, rigid leaf blades arranged in tight bunches. This structure helps minimize transpiration and mechanical damage. The root system is extensive and fibrous, which allows the plant to thrive in poor soils while simultaneously performing a critical role in soil stabilization and erosion prevention.
From an agricultural perspective, the plant is valued for its hardiness rather than high biomass production. It serves as an excellent stabilizer for steep slopes and degraded rangelands. It is highly resistant to frost and drought, though its slow growth rate means it requires careful management in grazing systems to ensure longevity.
