This plant is well-known for its impressive size in its native environment and the characteristic hemiepiphytic life cycle typical of many fig species, where it begins its development in the canopy of a host tree before sending down aerial roots to the ground.
The natural range of this species encompasses the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Indochina. It thrives in humid tropical rainforests, where it can grow into a massive specimen, with its root system eventually enveloping the host tree in a process common to many strangler figs.
Botanically, Ficus annulata is distinguished by its dense, leathery, elliptical leaves and prominent stipules that often cover the terminal buds. Flowering occurs within unique structures known as syconia; once pollinated by specific fig wasps, these syconia develop into small fruits that serve as a crucial food source for diverse tropical wildlife.
