The Fiddle-leaf fig is characterized by its large, violin-shaped, leathery leaves that grow on thick, woody stems. In its natural habitat, it acts as an epiphyte during its early life stage, eventually developing into a robust tree. This biological trait makes the plant well-adapted to container-based cultivation in controlled environments.
Agronomic requirements for this crop include a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting medium with a pH level ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. Light management is critical; while the plant thrives in bright, indirect light, direct exposure to harsh sun rays can cause leaf scorch, negatively impacting the commercial value of the specimen.
Climate control remains the most significant challenge in the commercial production of Ficus lyrata. The plant requires temperatures between 18°C and 27°C and high humidity levels. Extreme fluctuations in climate or cold drafts can lead to premature leaf drop, a physiological disorder that severely affects the plant's aesthetic and economic viability.
