Description
The garden strawberry, scientifically known as Fragaria × ananassa, belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a widely cultivated hybrid species, developed in Europe during the 18th century. Unlike wild species, the garden strawberry is specifically bred for its large, flavorful fruits and high yield potential in various temperate climates.
Botanically, the plant consists of a crown, a root system that typically extends about 15–20 cm deep, and trifoliate leaves. The species is characterized by its stoloniferous habit, producing runners for vegetative propagation. The flower structure features both male and female parts, making the plant self-fertile, although insect pollination significantly improves fruit size and quality.
Strawberry cultivation requires well-drained, sandy loam soils with high organic matter content and a slightly acidic pH level between 5.5 and 6.5. The crop is highly sensitive to soil moisture levels; therefore, efficient drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Adequate sunlight exposure is necessary to ensure proper sugar accumulation in the developing fruits.
Agrotechnical management focuses on high-density planting, weed control via mulch or plastic films, and precise irrigation scheduling. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial in modern strawberry production to maintain plant health and marketability. Seasonal pruning of runners is practiced to divert plant energy into fruit production rather than vegetative expansion.
