Frailea buenekeri is a miniature species within the Cactaceae family, belonging to the genus Frailea. It is highly sought after by succulent collectors due to its small stature and the biological trait of cleistogamy, where the flowers produce seeds without ever opening fully, ensuring propagation even in adverse conditions.

The native range of this species is in South America, specifically in certain regions of Brazil. It naturally inhabits rocky soils in very specific micro-habitats. Because of its limited distribution in the wild, the plant is considered a rarity and is maintained primarily through conservation efforts and dedicated private collections.

Botanically, the plant features a flattened, spherical stem that rarely grows larger than a few centimeters in diameter. It possesses subtle ribs covered with areoles, from which short, fine spines emerge. The flowers are funnel-shaped and relatively large compared to the plant body, emerging from the apex during the warmer months of the year.

Cultivation requires specialized agricultural practices: the substrate must be extremely porous, composed mostly of mineral components like coarse sand, gravel, and perlite. Proper drainage is the most critical factor, as this species is highly susceptible to root rot. Watering should be infrequent, allowed only after the soil has completely dried out, with a distinct dry resting period during winter in cool conditions.

The plant is used exclusively for ornamental purposes in botanical displays or private collections. It is not an agricultural crop but a specialty subject for enthusiasts. Common threats to its health include fungal issues stemming from overwatering and infestations by common cactus pests like spider mites or mealybugs, which must be controlled using appropriate systemic or contact pesticides.
