Known for its distinct growth pattern, this plant is a classic example of window-leaved succulents, which have evolved to survive in arid environments by burying their photosynthetic parts beneath the soil surface, exposing only translucent leaf tips to collect solar radiation.
The plant is endemic to South Africa, specifically regions within the Transvaal area. It is typically found growing in stony and sandy substrates, often nestled between rocks.
