Giant cabuya (Furcraea foetida) is a perennial succulent plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It is characterized by a massive rosette of sword-shaped leaves that can extend up to 2-3 meters in height. The plant is botanically related to agave and is well-known for its impressive adaptation to dry and nutrient-poor environments.

The native range of Furcraea foetida spans across tropical regions of South America and the Caribbean. Today, it is widely cultivated and naturalized in various tropical zones worldwide. It thrives in open, sunny areas and is highly tolerant to heat and periods of low rainfall, making it a reliable industrial crop in suitable climates.

Botanically, the species is famous for its massive inflorescence. It produces a tall, central flower stalk that can reach up to 8 meters in height. Following the production of numerous bulbils (small plantlets) on the inflorescence, the main plant dies, completing its long-lived reproductive cycle. In agricultural practice, the plant requires minimal maintenance once established. It thrives in sandy or loamy well-drained soils and does not require intensive fertilization. Farmers propagate the plant primarily through the bulbils produced on the flower stalks. Effective cultivation requires monitoring for local pests, although the plant's natural chemical defenses make it quite resilient.

The primary economic use of this culture is the extraction of its durable, white fiber, often marketed as Mauritius hemp. This fiber is highly valued in the maritime industry for its exceptional resistance to rotting and salt water, finding extensive application in ropes, nets, and twine production. Additionally, it is used locally for making handicrafts and as a decorative barrier plant.
