The Meadow star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea pratensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Liliaceae family. It is recognized as an early spring ephemeral, completing its rapid development cycle early in the year, which is typical for species that take advantage of the moisture surplus and light availability before the canopy closure.
The native range of this species extends across much of Europe, where it thrives in diverse environments such as dry meadows, forest edges, and grasslands. It is highly adapted to temperate climates, showing significant resistance to late frosts that often occur during its early growth stage.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a bulb consisting of two smaller bulbs encased in a common tunic. It produces narrow, linear basal leaves and a small cluster of yellow, star-shaped flowers with green-striped outer tepals. The plant's architecture is optimized for capturing solar radiation in the early spring period.
In terms of growing requirements, the species prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soils with a neutral pH. While it is rarely grown as a conventional agricultural crop, it is valued in ecological agriculture as an essential early-season nectar source for pollinators, supporting hive health after the long winter dormant period.
The plant is susceptible to fungal pathogens like basal rot if the soil remains waterlogged for extended periods.
