Gagnepain's barberry

Gagnepain's barberry (Berberis gagnepainii) is a distinctive evergreen shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family. It originates from the mountain regions of Western China, specifically Sichuan and Hubei provinces, where it thrives in forest margins and mountainous terrain.

This species is characterized by its stiff, upright growth habit, reaching heights of up to 2 meters. Its stems are armed with impressive, tripartite spines that can grow up to 3 cm long. The foliage consists of narrow, leathery leaves with wavy, serrated margins, providing year-round green color.

Regarding cultivation requirements, it prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. While it is reasonably hardy, it performs best in climates where winter temperatures do not drop excessively, as severe frosts can damage the foliage and young branches.

Agrotechnical management requires minimal intervention once the plant is established. Annual spring pruning is recommended to remove dead wood and maintain the desired shape. Although the plant is relatively drought-tolerant, supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells is beneficial for maintaining optimal vigor.

The primary horticultural application of Berberis gagnepainii is in landscape design, where it is highly valued for its evergreen nature and protective thorny barriers. It works exceptionally well in mixed borders or as a dense, security-focused hedge. The plant is prized for its aesthetic appeal during all seasons.
