The plant originates from the southern regions of North America, including the United States and Mexico. Due to its evolutionary background in prairie environments, the species is remarkably drought-tolerant and thrives in areas with high solar radiation and low soil moisture, which has facilitated its distribution as a decorative crop worldwide.
Botanically, the plant develops as a branching bushy form, reaching heights of 40–60 cm, with pubescent foliage that helps reduce transpiration.
