The origin and distribution of this plant span across temperate regions of Europe and Western Asia. It is natively associated with high water-table areas, such as river floodplains, marshy meadows, and the margins of ponds and lakes. Due to its adaptation to high moisture, it serves as a reliable indicator of specific wetland habitat conditions.
Botanically, the plant features a spreading rhizomatous root system and tall, typically branched stems that can grow up to one meter or more. The leaves are arranged in whorls, and the plant produces small, white, fragrant flowers arranged in loose panicles during the summer months. Successful management involves maintaining a consistent water supply and avoiding severe drainage, which would otherwise lead to the competitive exclusion of this species by more drought-tolerant weeds or grasses.
The main agricultural use of fen bedstraw is its contribution to the biomass of permanent pastures and hay meadows. Although it is not a high-protein forage, its presence increases the botanical diversity of the grazing area.
