The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, specifically the Alps, Pyrenees, and Apennines. It typically inhabits limestone outcrops and calcareous grasslands. In cultivation, it serves as a specialized crop for rock gardens and borders, where it mimics the natural rocky conditions of its native habitat, providing a sense of wilderness to the landscape.
Botanically, this species is characterized by a dense basal rosette of leathery leaves. A defining feature of Gentiana clusii is the lack of a peduncle, meaning the large flower sits directly within the leaf rosette.
