Gigantochloa scortechinii is a large, perennial, tropical bamboo species belonging to the Poaceae family. This species is widely recognized in Southeast Asia for its remarkable growth rate, impressive stem durability, and high biomass production, making it a critical economic crop for both traditional forestry and modern industrial sectors.

Native to the humid tropical regions of the Malay Peninsula, this bamboo thrives in lowland and hilly landscapes. In its natural habitat, it is frequently found in secondary forests. Cultivation requires a stable tropical climate characterized by temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius and an annual rainfall exceeding 2000 mm, which supports its rapid development.

Botanically, this species is a sympodial (clumping) bamboo that develops dense clusters of culms. The stems can grow to heights of 15–20 meters with diameters between 8 and 12 cm. A distinctive feature is the dark, hairy appearance of the culm sheaths, which provide protection for the emerging shoots. It possesses a vigorous root system that requires adequate space to spread horizontally.

Successful cultivation relies on choosing deep, well-drained loamy soils rich in organic matter. While the plant requires consistent moisture, it is sensitive to waterlogging, which can cause root rot. Planting is typically performed during the onset of the rainy season, ensuring the rhizomes become well-established before any potential dry spells occur.

The economic value of this bamboo is extensive, covering several sectors:
