The Water locust (Gleditsia aquatica) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. Unlike its more famous relative, the honey locust, this species is specifically adapted to wet, swampy environments, making it a distinctive subject for ecological studies and specialized land management projects. It is a rare tree that thrives in conditions where most hardwood species would fail due to root suffocation.

Native to the southeastern United States, this species is typically found in deep swamps, river floodplains, and bottomland forests. The tree’s distribution is naturally linked to hydrological patterns, as it requires periodically flooded soils to thrive. Its evolution in these humid environments has shaped its unique physiological mechanisms for surviving in water-saturated substrates.

While the tree can tolerate occasional dry spells once established, it prefers heavy clay soils that retain water well. Cultivation is best performed in full sun to partial shade. Standard tree maintenance includes clearing competition from invasive species and ensuring the planting site mimics its natural alluvial habitat.

The economic and ecological value of the Water locust includes its role in stabilizing riverbanks and restoring degraded wetland ecosystems.
