The plant is native to the high-altitude rocky regions of the Balkan Peninsula, particularly in Greece. Its natural habitat consists of limestone cliffs and debris slopes, where it has adapted to survive in nutrient-poor soils and harsh environmental conditions, showing high resilience to wind and temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, it is characterized by forming dense, low-growing mats of leathery, dark green leaves. During the blooming season, it produces upright stalks topped with spherical, deep blue or lavender flower heads. This structure allows the plant to minimize water loss and endure the arid conditions of its native alpine environment.
