Slender-rhizome mannagrass (Glyceria leptorrhiza) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae (grass) family. This species is highly specialized for wetland habitats, thriving in environments characterized by high soil moisture, standing water, and regular flood events, which distinguish it from typical field crops.
Native to parts of Eurasia, this grass is predominantly found in riparian zones, lake margins, and marshy meadows. Its natural distribution is largely defined by its ecological role in aquatic ecosystems, where it acts as an effective soil binder, stabilizing the banks of water bodies and preventing sediment erosion.
The botanical structure of the plant features slender, creeping rhizomes that facilitate vigorous vegetative spread, forming thick mats of vegetation. The stems grow to heights of 60–100 cm, accompanied by linear leaves. The inflorescence is a loose, drooping panicle, typical of the Glyceria genus, which produces numerous small seeds adapted for hydrochory.
Agronomic requirements emphasize the necessity of moisture-retentive soils, such as peaty or silty loams. The species requires constant water availability and does not tolerate drought conditions. In terms of cultivation, it is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal nitrogen input due to the nutrient-rich nature of typical wetland soils, though weed management in the establishment phase is essential.
Economically, this species is utilized as a forage crop for livestock grazing in marshy or reclaimed lands that are unsuitable for conventional cereal production. Beyond fodder production, it is increasingly recognized for its use in phytoremediation and environmental engineering, where it helps remove excess nutrients from runoff and treats wastewater in constructed wetlands.
