Floating mannagrass (Glyceria natans) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Often associated with Glyceria fluitans, this aquatic or semi-aquatic plant is well-known for its ability to thrive in waterlogged environments. As an agricultural crop, it is specifically managed in wet meadows and riparian zones to support grazing and hay production.
The native range of this species extends across temperate regions of Eurasia and North America. It predominantly grows in habitats such as pond margins, slow-moving streams, and marshy areas. Its distribution is closely linked to the availability of persistent surface water, making it a key species in the management of floodplains and reclaimed peatlands.
Botanically, it is characterized by creeping or ascending stems that can reach up to 1 meter in length. The leaves are typically bright green and elongated, sometimes floating on the water surface. The inflorescence is a panicle that produces nutrient-rich seeds. Its root system is exceptionally robust, allowing it to anchor securely in soft, silty substrates that are often oxygen-poor.
Cultivation requirements focus primarily on water management. Floating mannagrass performs best in soils with high organic content and constant moisture levels. While it does not require extensive dry-land soil preparation, water depth control is essential. Proper drainage management in wet meadows can help optimize yields and prevent the encroachment of less desirable woody shrubs or aggressive invasive species.
The primary agricultural use of floating mannagrass is as fodder. It is considered an excellent forage crop for cattle and horses, as it remains palatable throughout the growing season. Beyond its nutritional value, the plant is increasingly used in environmental engineering for biofiltration and wastewater treatment, as it effectively extracts nutrients and pollutants from water systems.
