Gomortega keule

Gomortega keule (Gomortega keule) is a unique evergreen tree and the sole representative of the Gomortegaceae family. It is an endemic species native to a narrow coastal range in central Chile, where it thrives in humid, temperate conditions provided by the proximity of the Pacific Ocean.

Botanically, the tree can reach heights of up to 20 meters, featuring dense, leathery, lanceolate leaves and a sturdy trunk. The plant produces yellowish-orange drupes, which are considered a local delicacy. These fruits possess a complex flavor profile that is often compared to a blend of quince and tropical stone fruits.

Cultivation of Gomortega keule requires specific environmental parameters. It thrives in deep, acidic, and well-draining soils with high organic matter content. Because it is highly sensitive to extreme frost and prolonged drought, the species is best suited for coastal areas with a stable climate and consistent air humidity throughout the growing season.

Agricultural management of this crop is currently limited by the tree's slow growth rate and its status as a protected species. Propagation is primarily carried out via seeds, though seedling care demands high levels of moisture and protection from direct, scorching sunlight in the initial years. Due to its rarity, efforts are focused more on conservation than large-scale industrial farming.
