Widely recognized in the international timber trade as 'ramin', this species is primarily native to the peat swamp forests of Southeast Asia. The natural range of Gonystylus bancanus spans across the peatlands of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. These environments are characterized by acidic, waterlogged soils and high precipitation throughout the year. The tree plays a crucial role in the ecosystem of these swamp forests, helping to maintain the water table and supporting local biodiversity within the forest canopy.
