Botanically, the plant consists of floating thalli (fronds) that are significantly larger than those of common duckweed. A defining characteristic of Spirodela polyrhiza is the cluster of multiple roots hanging from the underside of each frond, which provide stability and efficient nutrient uptake from the water column.
Cultivation of this plant requires nutrient-rich water with optimal pH levels between 6.0 and 8.0. It thrives under full sunlight and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Management practices include nutrient management (nitrogen and phosphorus supplementation) and frequent harvesting, which stimulates rapid regeneration and prevents overcrowding.
