The plant originates from desert regions where it thrives in coarse, sandy, or gravelly soils. Its evolutionary strategy involves minimizing exposure to extreme heat and wind by keeping the main body of the stem at or below ground level, which also serves as protection against browsing animals in its native habitat.

Botanically, it consists of small, segmented joints that can easily detach for vegetative propagation. The flowers are particularly notable for their large size and vibrant pink-to-purple coloration, which appear during the growing season and offer a stark contrast to the plant's often camouflaged, low-growing vegetative structure.

Cultivation requirements are strict, mirroring the plant's native ecological niche. It demands intense solar radiation and an inorganic, fast-draining substrate. During the growing season, a cycle of thorough watering followed by a complete drying of the soil is essential to mimic the sporadic rain events characteristic of its home range.
