Guibourtia coleosperma is a large, evergreen tree belonging to the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Often referred to as the Rhodesian copalwood or African rosewood, it is a significant species in the woodlands of Southern Africa, recognized for its durability and ecological importance.

The native range of this tree is strictly limited to the tropical and subtropical zones of Southern Africa. It is found in abundance in countries such as Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The species typically thrives in deep, well-drained sandy soils and forms vast forest expanses that are critical for the regional climate and local fauna.

Botanically, the tree can reach heights of up to 20 meters, featuring a wide, spreading crown. The leaves are leathery and typically consist of two leaflets. The flowers are small, creamy-white, and fragrant, while the fruit is a flat, indehiscent pod containing seeds with a fleshy, bright red aril, which is a unique morphological feature of the species.

Regarding cultivation requirements, Guibourtia coleosperma is adapted to hot climates with a distinct dry season. It is not frost-tolerant, which limits its commercial cultivation to specific tropical zones.
