The native distribution of this cactus is concentrated in the Chiquitos region of Bolivia. It typically inhabits arid, stony landscapes where it is exposed to intense sunlight and seasonal drought. These environmental conditions have influenced its evolutionary development, resulting in a plant that is highly efficient at water conservation and adapted to mineral-rich, well-draining soils.

Botanically, this species is characterized by its depressed-globose stem structure, often featuring well-defined ribs. The spines are typically short and radial, offering protection without obscuring the plant's texture.
