The natural habitat of this species encompasses the arid and semi-arid regions of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Northern Argentina. In these areas, the plant thrives in rocky outcrops and open terrain, having developed high resistance to extreme temperature fluctuations and limited water availability, which is characteristic of the South American scrublands.

Botanically, the plant features a flattened globular stem that becomes more elongated with age, marked by distinct ribs. The spines are typically firm, curved, and emerge from prominent areoles. The flowers are relatively large, infundibuliform (funnel-shaped), and typically bloom in shades ranging from creamy white to pale pink or lavender-pink.

Cultivation of this species requires a substrate that mimics its natural stony habitat, primarily emphasizing excellent drainage. A mix of mineral-based components, such as perlite, pumice, and coarse sand, should be used to prevent moisture accumulation around the roots. During the growing season, it benefits from moderate watering, while a dry, cool period is necessary during the winter months to trigger dormancy.
