The natural habitat of this species is located in the Afromontane forest zones, typically at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,500 meters. These regions provide a cool, humid climate that is ideal for the species. Because of its specific environmental requirements, it is a key component of the mountain forest canopy, helping to protect fragile soil structures on steep slopes.
Botanically, Hagenia abyssinica can grow up to 20 meters tall. It features large, pinnate, serrated leaves with a distinct velvet-like texture on the underside.
