Hairy canary clover (Latin: Dorycnium hirsutum) is a resilient perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Often overlooked in high-intensity farming, it serves as a critical crop in dryland agriculture, providing valuable biomass and nitrogen fixation in challenging environmental conditions.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin, where it thrives in rocky terrain, dry meadows, and disturbed lands. Its natural distribution spans across Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East. It has successfully adapted to low-fertility soils and Mediterranean climates marked by long periods of summer drought.
Botanically, this species is characterized by its distinct hairy or pubescent stems and leaves, which give the plant a silvery-grey appearance. It grows as a small, bushy shrub reaching up to 60 cm in height. The inflorescences are dense, head-like clusters of white to pale pink flowers that appear from late spring through summer, supported by a deep, expansive root system.
