Its ability to thrive in soil with extremely high sodium concentrations makes it a subject of interest for saline agriculture.

The plant originates from the arid regions of Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the coastlines of the Caspian and Aral Seas. It is naturally distributed in areas characterized by high salinity, including solonchaks and salt flats where the osmotic pressure is too high for conventional crops to survive. These regions are prone to desertification, and the plant serves as a vital environmental stabilizer.

Botanically, Halocnemum strobilaceum is distinguished by its succulent, jointed, and fleshy stems that look like tiny pinecones, which store water and sequester salts. The leaves are reduced to minute scales to minimize transpiration.
