Ukrainian sainfoin (Latin: Hedysarum ucrainicum) is a distinctive perennial herb belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family. Recognized for its resilience and nutritional value, this plant serves as an important resource for agricultural systems in temperate and semi-arid climates.

The plant originates from the Eurasian steppe regions, specifically within the territory of Ukraine. Its natural habitat includes chalk outcrops and limestone slopes, which has shaped its physiological ability to thrive in alkaline and nutrient-poor soils where other conventional crops might struggle to establish.

Botanically, it is characterized by a deep-reaching taproot system, which enables it to withstand prolonged dry spells.
