Hemp-leaved mallow (lat. Althaea cannabina L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Malvaceae family. Recognized for its vigorous growth and fibrous stems, it is increasingly studied as a viable source of natural fibers for technical applications, standing out as a robust candidate for sustainable farming practices.
Native to Central and Southern Europe, the Caucasus, and Western Asia, this species naturally thrives in riverbanks and damp grasslands. Its successful adaptation to various temperate environments has enabled its cultivation in different regions, where it is valued for its hardiness and ability to produce substantial biomass on marginal lands.
Botanically, the plant features tall, branching stems that can reach heights of up to two meters.
