The distribution of this species is global, as it is well-adapted to diverse climatic conditions. It is frequently observed in temperate and humid tropical zones, colonizing substrates such as damp soil, tree bark, stones, and weathered masonry. Its ability to withstand short-term desiccation makes it highly resilient in fluctuating environments.
Botanically, Hormidium velutinum consists of unbranched filaments formed by a single row of cylindrical or barrel-shaped cells. Each cell contains a characteristic parietal chloroplast equipped with a pyrenoid. Reproduction is achieved through vegetative fragmentation of the filaments or via the formation of motile zoospores, which allow the species to disperse effectively when moisture levels are optimal.
Regarding its requirements, the species is strictly dependent on moisture levels rather than soil chemistry, though it thrives in neutral to slightly acidic environments.
