Unlike typical agricultural crops, this plant is entirely heterotrophic, lacking chlorophyll and leaves, and exists by extracting nutrients directly from the roots of host plants, usually succulent euphorbias.

The plant is native to the arid desert regions of Southern Africa, particularly within the territories of Namibia and parts of South Africa. It thrives in harsh environments characterized by sandy, nutrient-poor soils and extremely low annual rainfall, where it remains mostly subterranean to avoid desiccating surface conditions.
