Floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) is a perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic plant belonging to the Araliaceae family. Previously classified under the Apiaceae family, it is known for its distinctive morphology and rapid growth pattern. The plant is widely recognized for its ability to form dense, floating mats on the surface of freshwater bodies, which significantly influences local aquatic ecosystems.
The plant is native to North and South America, where it occupies diverse wetland habitats. Over the past decades, it has expanded its range significantly and is now found in various regions across Europe, Africa, and Australia. Its habitat typically includes the margins of slow-moving rivers, lakes, ponds, and drainage ditches where moisture levels remain consistently high throughout the year.
Botanically, the plant features creeping stems that grow horizontally across the water surface or wet soil, rooting at the nodes. The leaves are rounded, often kidney-shaped, and feature scalloped margins on long, succulent petioles. The root system is relatively shallow, designed to extract nutrients directly from the water column or mud.
