Description
Hydrocotyle tripartita is an attractive herbaceous plant belonging to the Araliaceae family. Highly prized in the hobby of aquascaping, this species is well-known for its rapid growth rate and its ability to form dense, vibrant green carpets that resemble clover in texture.
Originating from Southeast Asia and Australia, this plant naturally occurs in marshy areas and along riverbanks. It exhibits great versatility, being able to grow both submerged in water and in emersed conditions, provided there is constant soil moisture and high humidity levels in the surrounding environment.
Botanically, the plant features creeping stems with distinct tri-lobed leaves on long petioles. The root system is relatively shallow, allowing the plant to spread horizontally across the substrate. When exposed to high light intensities, the stems grow compact and dense; conversely, in low-light environments, the plant tends to stretch, resulting in a leggier appearance.
Successful cultivation requires a nutrient-rich substrate and consistent lighting conditions. While it can adapt to various water parameters, the addition of carbon dioxide and regular fertilization promotes the most lush and healthy growth. Pruning is an essential maintenance task, as the plant can quickly overgrow its allotted space due to its vigorous nature.
