Originating from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, this species thrives in riverine habitats and wetlands. Its natural distribution spans across countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where it occupies the edges of flowing and stagnant water bodies. This environmental background defines its high tolerance for various water parameters and soil types.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by thick, woody stems and large, opposite leaves that exhibit distinct venation. Depending on the lighting conditions, the leaf structure can become more compact. As an angiosperm, it produces small, aesthetically pleasing flowers when grown emersed, demonstrating the typical morphological traits of the Acanthaceae family.
Agricultural requirements include high nutrient availability in the substrate and consistent lighting. To ensure optimal growth, the temperature should remain between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. The soil should be well-drained if grown emersed, or rich in nutrients with a slightly acidic to neutral pH when grown submerged.
