Hyophorbe amaricaulis is a critically endangered species of palm in the Arecaceae family. Often referred to in botanical circles as one of the rarest trees on Earth, it is currently represented in the wild by only a single known mature specimen found on the island of Mauritius, making its conservation a global priority.

The native range of this species is strictly limited to Mauritius. Historically, the plant was part of the island's unique ecosystem, but habitat loss and invasive species have decimated its population. Scientific efforts are currently focused on ex-situ conservation programs, aiming to propagate the species in controlled botanical environments to prevent its complete extinction.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its distinct, often solitary stem and a crown of stiff, pinnate leaves. It belongs to the Hyophorbe genus, which is famous for its ornamental bottle-shaped palms. The growth rate is notably slow, which is a significant factor in both its survival strategy and its difficulty in successful mass propagation.

Agricultural and horticultural requirements for this palm are extremely demanding. It requires a stable, high-humidity tropical environment with constant temperatures. The growing medium must be highly porous and well-draining, as the roots are highly susceptible to rot if they remain waterlogged. Providing adequate light and air circulation is essential for mimicking its natural habitat.

Beyond its botanical value, the plant has no commercial agricultural use due to its extreme scarcity. The primary challenges in its care include vulnerability to typical greenhouse pests like scale insects and mites. Additionally, growers must be vigilant against root pathogens that can emerge if the soil substrate does not meet strict drainage standards.
