Spoon-leaved candytuft (lat. Iberis spathulata) is a resilient perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is a highly valued species in ornamental horticulture, particularly appreciated for its compact size and ability to create dense, flower-rich mats in challenging garden environments.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, specifically the Pyrenees. Growing naturally on rocky slopes and screes, the species has evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor soils and withstand harsh, high-altitude climates. This evolutionary background makes it an exceptionally hardy plant for temperate zone gardeners.

Botanically, Iberis spathulata is defined by its characteristic spatulate leaves arranged in basal rosettes. During its peak flowering season, the plant produces clusters of small, fragrant flowers that typically range in color from soft white to pale lilac. The plant develops a deep, sturdy taproot that allows it to anchor firmly in rocky substrates.

For successful cultivation, the species requires specific site conditions. It must be planted in full sun to maintain its compact, cushion-like habit; shade-grown specimens tend to become "leggy" and unattractive. The soil must be exceptionally well-drained; gravelly or sandy loams with a neutral to alkaline pH are ideal. Excessive irrigation or heavy, water-retentive soils will inevitably lead to root decline.
