Inga paterno is a fast-growing tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, specifically the Mimosoideae subfamily. In its natural habitat, this tree can reach heights of 15 to 20 meters, featuring a wide, spreading canopy that provides significant shade, making it a highly valuable component in modern agroforestry systems.

Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, the range of cultivation stretches from Mexico down to Panama. The species is traditionally employed as a "shade tree" for coffee and cacao plantations, where it serves a dual purpose: protecting sensitive crops from direct tropical sun and naturally fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the soil through root nodules.

Botanically, Inga paterno is distinguished by its paripinnate leaves and long, cylindrical pods. The interior of these pods contains an edible, sweet, white, cottony pulp surrounding the seeds. The tree produces fluffy, white, fragrant inflorescences that are highly attractive to local pollinators and honey-producing insects.

Climatic requirements are strict, necessitating high humidity, average annual temperatures between 20 °C and 28 °C, and deep, well-drained soils. The plant is intolerant to waterlogged soils and is highly sensitive to frost. Effective agrotechnics involve regular pruning of the canopy to manage shade levels and to maintain the structural health and balance of the tree.
