Inga spectabilis, commonly known as the ice cream bean or guamo, is a fast-growing leguminous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is widely recognized for its significant role in agroforestry systems throughout tropical America, providing both nutritional value and ecological services.
The native habitat of this species extends from Central to South America, particularly in humid tropical lowlands. It thrives in high-temperature environments with consistent moisture, making it a critical component of forest restoration projects and traditional tropical farming in countries like Ecuador and Panama.
Botanically, this species is a large tree reaching heights of up to 25 meters. Its most notable feature is the elongated pod, which can grow over 80 centimeters in length. Inside, the seeds are covered in a sweet, fluffy white pulp that resembles cotton candy in texture, which is why it is often called the "ice cream bean" in English-speaking regions.
The cultivation requirements for Inga spectabilis include well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and a tropical climate without prolonged dry periods. As a nitrogen-fixer, it is highly efficient at improving soil health by enriching it with organic matter and symbiotic bacteria, though it requires specific site preparation to establish successfully in degraded soils.
