Bulley iris

The Bulley iris (Iris bulleyana) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Iridaceae family. Part of the sibirica group of irises, this species is highly valued for its elegant form and its natural affinity for moist environments, making it an excellent candidate for water-side gardens and damp borders.

Originating from the mountainous regions of Western China, specifically Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, this plant is naturally adapted to high-altitude meadows and stream banks. Because of its alpine heritage, the Bulley iris exhibits high cold hardiness, allowing it to thrive in temperate climates where other irises might struggle with winter dampness.

Botanically, it is characterized by compact rhizomes and slender, grass-like foliage that creates dense, attractive clumps. The stems reach heights of 40 to 60 centimeters, producing flowers with a complex color palette, typically ranging from deep violet-blue to lighter shades with intricate veining patterns on the falls. Bloom time is typically early summer.

Successful cultivation requires a location with full sun to partial shade and soil that is rich in organic matter. Unlike many other iris species, Iris bulleyana prefers consistently moist to wet soil conditions. Proper maintenance involves regular watering during dry spells and annual mulching to retain soil moisture and protect the root zone from extreme temperature fluctuations.
