Vesper iris

The Vesper iris (scientific name Iris dichotoma, often classified as Pardanthopsis dichotoma) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Iridaceae family. It is distinct for its unique branching inflorescence pattern that resembles a fork, which is the primary trait defining its botanical classification.

The native distribution area of this species spans across East Asia, specifically encompassing China, Mongolia, Korea, and parts of Southern Siberia. Adapted to harsh continental environments, the plant thrives in open, sunny locations such as rocky hillsides, steppe grasslands, and dry meadows, demonstrating high resilience to temperature fluctuations.

Botanically, the plant features a short rhizome and basal rosettes of sword-shaped leaves. One of the most fascinating aspects of Iris dichotoma is its bloom cycle: each flower is ephemeral, opening in the afternoon and wilting by dusk, but the massive production of buds on the multi-forked stem ensures a prolonged flowering season throughout the late summer.

From an agrotechnical perspective, the Vesper iris demands excellent drainage and full sun exposure. It is highly drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes or rock gardens. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline, gritty soils. Growers must avoid heavy, waterlogged substrates as the rhizomes are prone to rot under excess moisture conditions.
